JB Hunt is the author of a paranormal romance series about the Four Arcs, an island world hidden in the North Atlantic.

Every time I dive into another chapter of the Four Arcs, I revisit my favorite far-flung places and mash together aspects of their cultures and landscapes.

The ruins and the legends in the Four Arcs are jumbled, just like the people. Walk into any bar in the realm, and you're surrounded by men and women who look like they just walked off the streets of Delhi, Oslo, Hong Kong, Nairobi, Guatemala City, Edinburgh. All in the same room.

Here's how Trevor, an outsider who's actually from South Georgia but winds up trapped in the Arcs (sort of like Gilligan on that three-hour tour), describes his encounter with the South Arc ruins of the moon goddess:

"He stood in the Great Plaza at Ixchel, surrounded by temples and the weight of history and myth. It was worse than the Civil War Cyclorama at the Atlanta Zoo. He examined the markings on the stelae in front of Temple One and laughed. What were Chinese characters doing next to Mayan hieroglyphs? He knew enough to distinguish writing systems from cultures that were as far apart as the globe allowed. It hadn’t been biochem 24/7 in college."
